Tall Fluted Feet (TFF) hinges variations

Quick find today.

Believe it or not, I’ve missed a little detail on our TFF boxes.

Boxes that look like this..

The hinges on these boxes are mortised in to the top and back and are visible on the interior more than on the exterior.  See below…

I just noticed there are two versions of the hinges used on the TFF boxes.  You can see the difference in the photos above but here is a closer look at the hinges in the top photo…

The hinge above is more secure because it hooks over the edge of the inside of the box and the inside of the lid.  While the hinge shown in the photo above would appear to be an improvement over the other version, a box dated 1937 has been found with this hinge.  Did the change take place very quickly or is the above hinge the first one used? I’m looking into this now.  Reminder, the earliest known TFF is dated 1936.
